Once in royal David's city,
stood a lowly cattle shed,
where a mother laid her Baby,
in a manger for His bed:
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ, her little Child.
He came down to earth from heaven,
who is God and Lord of all,
and His shelter was a stable,
and His cradle was a stall:
with the poor, and mean, and lowly,
lived on earth our Saviour holy.
And through all His wondrous childhood
He would honour and obey,
love and watch the lowly maiden/mother
in whose gentle arms He lay.
Christian children all must/should be
mild, obedient, good as He.
For He is our childhood's pattern;
day by day, like us, He grew;
He was little, weak, and helpless,
tears and smiles, like us, He knew;
and He feeleth for our sadness/cares when we are sad,
and he shared for our gladness/shares when we are glad.
And our eyes at last shall see Him,
through His own redeeming love;
for that Child so dear and gentle,
is our Lord in hea'en above:
and He leads His children on,
to the place where He is gone.
Not in that poor lowly stable,
with the oxen standing by,
we shall see Him, but in heaven,
set at God's right hand on high;
when like stars His children crowned
all in white shall wait around.We, like Mary, rest confounded
that a stable should display
heaven's Word, the world's creator,
cradled there on Christmas Day,
yet this child, our Lord and brother,
brought us love for one another.

4. Ding dong merrily on high
On Christmas night all Christians sing
To hear the news the angels bring
On Christmas night all Christians sing
To hear the news the angels bring
News of great joy, news of great mirth News of our merciful King's birth
Then why should men on earth be so sad
since our Redeemer made us glad?
Then why should men on earth be so sad
since our Redeemer made us glad?
When from our sin He set us free
all for to gain our liberty?When sin departs before His grace
then life and health come in its place.
When sin departs before His grace
Then life and health come in its place;
angels and men with joy may sing
all for to see the newborn King.
All out of darkness we have light
which made the angels sing this night,
all out of darkness we have light
which made the angels sing this night:
'Glory to God and peace to men
Now and forever more. Amen'
Ding dong merrily on high,
In heav'n the bells are ringing:
Ding dong! verily the sky
Is riv'n with angel singing.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
E'en so here below, below,
Let steeple bells be swungen,
And "Io, io, io!"
By priest and people sungen.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Pray you, dutifully prime
Your matin chime, ye ringers;
May you beautifully rime
Your evetime song, ye singers.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
5. Sir ChristemasNowel, Nowel, Nowel, Nowel, Nowel, Nowel, Nowel, Nowel,
Who is there, that singeth so Nowel
Nowel, Nowel? Nowel, Nowel?I am here, Sir Christmas
Welcome, my lord Sir Christmas,
Welcome to all both more and less;
Come near Nowel.God be with you, Sir, tidings I you bring,
A maid hath born a child full young,
The which causeth me to sing.
Nowel.Christ is now born of a pure maid,
In an ox stall he is laid,
Wherefore sing we all at abraid,
Nowel.Drink you all right heartily,
Make good cheer and be right merry,
And sing with us now joyfully,
Nowel.
6. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
God rest ye merry, gentlemen,
let nothing you dismay,
Remember, Christ, our Saviour
was born on Christmas day
to save us all from Satan's power
when we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joyFrom God our Heavenly Father
a blessed Angel came;
and unto certain shepherds
brought tidings of the same:
how that in Bethlehem was born
the Son of God by Name.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
The shepherds at those tidings
rejoiced much in mind,
and left their flocks a-feeding
in tempest, storm and wind:
and went to Bethlehem straightway
the Son of God to find.O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy But when to Bethlehem they came whereat this infant lay,
they found Him in a manger,
where oxen feed on hay;
His Mother Mary kneeling (down),
unto the Lord did pray.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
Now to the Lord sing praises,
all you within this place,
and with true love and brotherhood
each other now embrace;
this holy tide of Christmas
All other doth deface.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joyOther
In Bethlehem, in Israel,
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn
The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
verses
"Fear not then," said the Angel,
"Let nothing you affright,
This day is born a Saviour
Of a pure Virgin bright,
To free all those who trust in Him
From Satan's power and might."
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
7. For Unto Us A Child Is Born
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace
A rose has sprung up,
from a tender root.
As the old ones sang to us,
its lineage was from Jesse.
And it has brought forth a floweret
in the middle of the cold winter
well at half the night. Lo, how a rose e'er blooming,
From tender stem hath sprung.
Of Jesse's lineage coming,
As men of old have sung;
It came, a flow'ret bright,
Amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.Das Röslein, das ich meine,
davon Jesaia sagt,
ist Maria die reine
die uns das Blümlein bracht.
Aus Gottes ew'gem Rat
hat sie ein Kind geboren
und blieb ein reine Magd.The rosebud that I mean,
of which Isaiah told
is Mary, the pure,
who brought us the floweret.
At God’s immortal word,
she has borne a child
remaining a pure maid.Das Blümelein, so kleine,
das duftet uns so süß,
mit seinem hellen Scheine
vertreibt's die Finsternis.
Wahr Mensch und wahrer Gott,
hilft uns aus allem Leide,
rettet von Sünd und Tod.The floweret, so small
that smells so sweet to us
with its clear light
dispels the darkness.
True man and true God!
He helps us from all trouble,
saves us from sin and death.O Flower, whose fragrance tender
With sweetness fills the air,
Dispel with glorious splendour
The darkness everywhere;
True man, yet very God,
From Sin and death now save us,
And share our every load.
9. The holly and the ivy
The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown
(refrain)O the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ
Sweet singing of the choir
The holly bears a blossom
As white as lily flower
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
To be our sweet Saviour(refrain)
The holly bears a berry
As red as any blood
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
To do poor sinners good
The holly bears a prickle
As sharp as any thorn;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
On Christmas Day in the morn.
The holly bears a bark
As bitter as any gall;
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ
For to redeem us all.
The holly and the ivy
Now both are full well grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown.
Sweet singing,sweet singing of the choir
Y María dio a luz dulce Jesucristo
Para hacer el bien a los pobres pecadores.
El acebo tiene un borde
Tan agudo como una espina;
Y María dio a luz dulce Jesucristo
El día de Navidad en la mańana.
El acebo tiene una corteza
tan amarga como la hiel;
Y María dio a luz dulce Jesucristo
Para redimirnos a todos.
El acebo y la hiedra
Ahora ambos están crecidos,
De todos los árboles en el bosque
El acebo lleva la corona.

12. A hymn to the virgin (Britten)
Dos coros, 2ş indentado
Of one that is so fair and bright
Velut maris stella,
Brighter than the day is light,
Parens et puella:
I cry to thee, thou see to me,
Lady, pray thy Son for me
Tam pia,
That I may come to thee.
Maria!
All this world was forlorn
Eva peccatrice,
Till our Lord was y-born
De te genetrice.
With ave it went away
Darkest night, and comes the day
Salutis
The well springeth out of thee.
Virtutis.
Lady, flow'r of ev'rything,
Rosa sine spina,
Thou bare Jesu, Heaven's King,
Gratia divina:
Of all thou bear'st the prize,
Lady, queen of paradise
Electa:
Maid mild, mother es Effecta.
Effecta.

While shepherds watched their flocks by night
All seated on the ground
The angel of the Lord came down
And glory shone around
"Fear not," he said, for mighty dread
Had seized their troubled minds
"Glad tidings of great joy I bring
To you and all mankind,
"To you in David's Town this day
Is born of David's line
The Savior who is Christ the Lord
And this shall be the sign
"The heav'nly Babe you there shall find
To human view displayed
And meanly wrapped in swathing bands
And in a manger laid"
Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith
appeared a shining throng
of angels praising God, who thus
addressed their joyful song:
"All glory be to God on high
And to the earth be peace;
Goodwill henceforth from heav'n to men
Begin and never cease".
16. What sweeter music
What sweeter music can we bring
Than a carol, for to sing
The birth of this our heavenly King?
Awake the voice! Awake the string!
Dark and dull night fly hence away,
And give the honor to this day
That sees December turned to May.
Why does the chilling winter’s morn
Smile, like a field beset with corn?
Or smell like a meadow newly shorn
Thus on the sudden? Come and see
The cause, why things thus fragrant be :
« Tis he is born, whose quickening birth
Gives life and lustre, public mirth,
To heaven and the underearth.
We see him come, and know his mours,
Who, with his sunshine and his showers,
Turns all the patient ground to flowers.
The darling of the world is come,
And fit it is, we find a room
To welcome him, to welcome him.
The nobler part of all the house here, is the heart,
Which we will give him; and bequeath
This holly, and this ivy wreath,
To do him honor; who’s our King,
And Lord of all this revelling.
What sweeter music can we bring
Than a carol, for to sing
The birth of this our heavenly King.
17. In the bleak mid-winter
1. In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.
2. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him
Nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away
When He comes to reign:
In the bleak mid-winter
A stable-place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty,
Jesus Christ.3. Enough for Him, whom cherubim
Worship night and day,
A breastful of milk
And a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, whom angels
Fall down before,
The ox and ass and camel
Which adore.
4. Angels and archangels
May have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim
Thronged the air,
But only His mother1
In her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the Beloved
With a kiss.5. What can I give Him,
Poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd
I would bring a lamb,
If I were a wise man
I would do my part,
Yet what I can I give Him,
Give my heart.18. O magnum mysterium,
O magnum mysterium,
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
jacentem in praesepio!
Beata Virgo, cujus viscera
meruerunt portare
Dominum Christum.
Alleluia.ˇOh gran misterio,
y admirable sacramento,
cuando los animales vieron al Seńor nacido,
acostado en un pesebre!
Bienaventurada la Virgen, cuyo vientre
fue digno de llevar
a Cristo el Seńor.
Aleluya.19. Cantique de Jean Racine (Fauré)
- Verbe égal au Trčs-Haut, notre unique espérance,
- jour éternel de la terre et des cieux,
- de la paisible nuit nous rompons le silence:
- divin sauveur, jette sur nous les yeux!
- Répands sur nous le feu de ta grâce puissante;
- Que tout l'enfer fuie au son de ta voix;
- dissipe ce sommeil d'une âme languissante
- qui la conduit ŕ l'oubli de tes lois!
- Ô Christ ! sois favorable ŕ ce peuple fidčle,
- pour te bénir maintenant rassemblé;
- reçois les chants qu'il offre ŕ ta gloire immortelle,
- et de tes dons qu'il retourne comblé.
20. O Come All Ye Faithful (Adeste Fideles)1. O Come All Ye Faithful Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, Born the King of Angels;(O come, let us adore Him,) O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.2. God of God, Light of Light, Lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb; Very God, Begotten not created.(O come, let us adore Him,) O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.3. See how the shepherds, summoned to His cradle,
leaving their flocks, draw nigh to gaze
We too will thither bend our hearts' oblations(O come, let us adore Him,)
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
4. Lo! star-led chieftains, magi, Christ adoring,
offer Him incense, gold and myrrh;
We to the Christ-child, bring our hearts oblations(O come, let us adore Him,)
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.5. Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger,
fain we embrace Thee, with awe and love;
Who would not love Thee, loving us so dearly?(O come, let us adore Him,)
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.6. Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation;
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God, In the highest;
