The text of Monteverdi’s Beatus vir with an English translation.
 The text is from the Latin Vulgate Bible .  The translation is from the King James Bible
Beatus vir, qui timet Dominum:
In mandatis eius rolet nimis.
Potens in terra erit semen eius;
Generatio rectorum benedicetur.
Gloria et divitiae in domo eius;
Et justitia eius manet in saeculum saeculi.
Exortum est in tenebris lumen rectis:
Miséricors, et miserátor et justus.
Jucundus homo qui miseretur et commodat.
Disponet sermones suos in judicio:
Quia in aeternum non commovebitur.
In memoria aeterna erit justus.
Ab auditione mala non timebit.
Parátum cor eius sperare in Domino;
Confirmatum est, cor eius:
Non commovebitur,
Donec despiciat inimicos suos.
Dispersit, dedit pauperibus:
Justitia eius manet in saeculum saeculi,
Cornu eius exaltabitur in gloria.
Peccator videbit, et irascetur;
Dentibus suis fremet et tabescet.
Desiderium peccatorum peribit.

Blessed is the man who fears the lord:
He delights greatly in his commandments.
His seed will be mightly on earth;
The generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in his house;
And his righteousness endures for ever and ever.
Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness:
He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
Good is the man who is full of compassion and lends.
He will guide his affairs with discretion:
Because he will not be moved for ever.
The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance.
He will not be afraid of evil tidings.
His heart is fixed, trusting in the lord;
His heart is established:
He will not be moved,
Until he gazes at his enemies.
He has dispersed, he has given to the poor:
His righteousness endures for ever and ever,
His strength will be exalted with honour.
The sinner will see it, and will be grieved;
He will gnash with his teeth, and melt away.
Wishes of sinners will perish (myself transl.)

Potens in terra erit semen eius; / Su descendencia será fuerte en la tierra;
Generatio rectorum benedicetur.
In memoria aeterna erit justus.
Non commovebitur, / y no temerá,
Donec despiciat inimicos suos.
Dentibus suis fremet et tabescet. / rechinan sus dientes y se consume;
Desiderium peccatorum peribit.

Laudate pueri Dominum:
laudate nomen Domini.
Sit nomen Domini benedictum,
ex hoc nunc et usque in seculum.
A solis ortu usque ad occasum,
laudabile nomen Domini.
Excelsus super omnes gentes Dominus,
et super coelos gloria eius.

Quis sicut Dominus Deus noster, qui in altis habitat,
et humilia respicit in coelo et in terra:
Suscitans a terra inopem
et de stercore erigens pauperem,
Ut collocet eum cum principibus,
cum principibus populi sui?

Qui habitare facit sterilem in domo,
matrem filiorum laetantem?

Gloria patria...
Praise the Lord, O children:
praise the name of the Lord.
May the name of the Lord be blessed,
from this time forth and for evermore.
From sunrise until sunset,
worthy of praise is the name of the Lord.
High above all nations is the Lord,
and his glory above the heavens.

Who is like unto the Lord our God, who dwells on high
and beholds the humble in heaven and earth:
raising the helpless from the earth
and lifting from the dungheap the poor man,
to place him alongside princes,
with the princes of his people?

Who makes the barren women to keep house,
a joyful mother of children?

Glory be to the Father...

Confitebor secondo Salmo 110  (o 111)

Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 110)
Latin.png Latin text
1  Alleluja. Confitebor tibi, Domine, in toto corde meo, in consilio justorum, et congregatione.
2  Magna opera Domini: exquisita in omnes voluntates ejus.
3  Confessio et magnificentia opus ejus, et justitia ejus manet in saeculum saeculi.
4  Memoriam fecit mirabilium suorum, misericors et miserator Dominus.
5  Escam dedit timentibus se; memor erit in saeculum testamenti sui.
6  Virtutem operum suorum annuntiabit populo suo,
7  ut det illis haereditatem gentium.   Opera manuum ejus veritas et judicium.
8  Fidelia omnia mandata ejus,   confirmata in saeculum saeculi, facta in veritate et aequitate.
9  Redemptionem misit populo suo; mandavit in aeternum testamentum suum.
10  Initium sapientiae timor Domini; intellectus bonus omnibus facientibus eum: laudatio ejus manet in saeculum saeculi.

Church of England 1662 Book of Common Prayer
English.png English text
1  I will give thanks unto the Lord with my whole heart: secretly among the faithful, and in the congregation.
2  The works of the Lord are great: sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.
3  His work is worthy to be praised and had in honour: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
4  The merciful and gracious Lord hath so done his marvellous works:  that they ought to be had in remembrance.
5  He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he shall ever be mindful of his covenant.
6  He hath shewed his people the power of his works:   that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.
7  The works of his hands are verity and judgement:    all his commandments are true.
8  They stand fast for ever and ever: and are done in truth and equity.
9  He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever; holy and reverend is his Name.
10  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do thereafter; the praise of it endureth for ever.

Traducción al español (Salmo 110)
Spanish.png Spanish text
1  ¡Aleluya!.

Metrical Old Version (Thomas Norton)
English.png English text
1  With heart I do accord
To praise and laud the Lord,
In presence of the just:
2  For great his works are found,
To search them such are bound,
As do him love and trust.
3  His works are glorious,
Also his righteousness,
It doth endure for ever:
4  His wondrous works he would
We still remember should,
His mercy faileth never.

5  Such as to him love bear,
A portion full fair
He hath up for them laid:
For this they shall well find,
He will them have in mind,
And keep them as he said.
6  For he did not disdain,
His works to shew them plain,
By lightnings and by thunders:
When he the heathens' land
Did give into their hand,
Where they beheld his wonders.

7  Of all his works ensu'th
Both judgment, right and truth,
Whereto his statutes tend:
8  They are decreed sure
For ever to endure,
Which equity doth end.
9  Redemption he gave
His people for to save:
And also hath required
His promise not to fail,
But always to prevail:
His holy name be feared.

10  Whoso with heart full fain
True wisdom would attain,
The Lord fear and obey:
Such as his laws do keep
Shall knowledge have full deep,
His praise shall last for ay.

Metrical New Version (Tate/Brady)
English.png English text
1  Praise ye the Lord; our God to praise
My soul her utmost pow'rs shall raise,
With private friends, and in the throng
Of saints, his praise shall be my song.

2  His works, for greatness though renown'd,
His wondrous works with ease are found
By those who seek for them aright,
And in the pious search delight.

3  His works are all of matchless fame,
And universal glory claim;
His truth, confirm'd through ages past,
Shall to eternal ages last.

4  By precept he has us enjoin'd
To keep his wondrous works in mind;
And to posterity record,
That good and gracious is our Lord.

5  His bounty, like a flowing tide,
Has all his servants' wants supplied;
And he will ever keep in mind
His cov'nant with our fathers sign'd.

6  At once astonish'd and o'erjoy'd,
They saw his matchless pow'r employ'd;
Whereby the heathen were suppress'd,
And we their heritage possess'd.

7  Just are the dealings of his hands,
Immutable are his commands;
8  By truth and equity sustain'd,
And for eternal rules ordain'd.

9  He set his saints from bondage free,
And then establish'd his decree,
For ever to remain the same;
Holy and rev'rend is his Name.

10  Who wisdom's sacred prize would win,
Must with the fear of God begin;
Immortal praise and heavenly skill
Have they, who know and do his will.
